Thailand LTR Visa for Family Members and Dependents

Understand dependent eligibility, financial requirements, insurance, documents and the application sequence for families of LTR Visa holders.

Family Residence Under the Thailand LTR Visa

Family sponsorship is one of the principal benefits of the Thailand LTR Visa.

Eligible family members may apply for dependent status connected to a main applicant under any of the four primary LTR categories. Each dependent must create a separate application account, and the main applicant must approve the linking request through the official system.

Important Official-Source Discrepancy

Current official BOI materials are not completely consistent regarding dependent eligibility.

The BOI’s 2025 brochure states that the criteria were expanded to include parents and legal dependents and that the previous numerical limit was removed.

However, the live LTR eligibility page continues to state that dependents are limited to a legal spouse and children under 20, with a maximum of four dependents.

Because both are official BOI sources, applicants should obtain written confirmation from the LTR Visa Unit before relying on parent eligibility or an unlimited number of dependents.

Spouses

A legally recognised spouse may apply as a dependent.

The current official page also confirms that legally recognised same-sex marriages are eligible. Unregistered partnerships are not currently accepted under the dependent category.

Children

The live BOI criteria state that dependent children must generally be under 20 years old.

Children receive dependent status only until the applicable age limit, unless another independent immigration basis is available.

Insurance or Financial Requirement

Each dependent generally needs one of the following:

  • Health insurance covering at least USD 50,000

  • Appropriate Thai social security coverage

  • A maintained bank balance of at least USD 25,000 per dependent for at least 12 months

The funds may be held in the main applicant’s or dependent’s name, subject to the current requirements.

Documents Commonly Required

Dependent applications may require:

  • Passport

  • Recent photograph

  • Marriage certificate

  • Birth certificate

  • Adoption, custody or dependency documents

  • Consent form from the main applicant

  • Health insurance or financial evidence

  • Certified translations

  • Legalisation or apostille where required

  • Main applicant’s application reference or document number

Application Sequence

  1. The main applicant creates and begins the LTR application

  2. The main applicant receives a document number

  3. Each dependent creates a separate online account

  4. Each dependent submits an individual application

  5. The main applicant approves the dependent-linking request

  6. The applications are reviewed by the relevant authorities

  7. Each approved applicant completes their own visa issuance and fee payment

Does a Dependent Receive the Same Visa Duration?

Dependent residence is linked to the eligibility and validity of the principal LTR holder.

Family members should not assume that their residence can remain valid independently if the principal applicant loses or terminates LTR status.
